For Giveaway: 4 port PS2 KVM's

We are cleaning out the supply cabinet before our move to the new Lourdes and have three 4-port PS2 KVM's if anyone could make use of them.  Just let me know before we have to recycle them.mcormack@rochestercatholic.k12.mn.usSee More

Moving a small data center

We will be moving our data center to the new Lourdes High School next summer. The new network will be in place in the new building, but we do need to move a firewall appliance and about a dozen Microsoft Windows 2003 and 2008 servers.  Most of the servers are low end IBM System x Tower servers, though we have a few rack mount servers as well.  Given the small number and relatively light weight, we were thinking that we would just move them ourselves using a minivan.  We figured we would be more…See More

Secure or Private Cloud Service with Easy Client Access

We have had more than one request from teachers and staff to have us install the Drop Box or Google Drive client on their school desktop systems so that they can easily sync files.  These free cloud services offer really excellent ease of use interfaces on a variety of platforms. The problem is that they are so easy to use, that with widespread use by staff, inevitably student private data will get exposed and that makes us extremely uncomfortable. To me it would make more sense to use a secured…See More

Staff Home/Remote Access To School Network

Do most districts allow their teachers and staff to log onto their school internal network from home? If so how do you do it?  VPN?  RDP? Third party software like LogMeIn?See More

May need up to 20 monitors for a student lab

I have been asked to size what it would take to quickly outfit a room as a computer lab.  Thanks to Damon, I have the systems I need, but we really cleaned house and disposed of all of our spare CRT monitors, and so now I do not have enough spares to outfit the lab.  I am going to have to come up with 15 to 20 computer monitors for this lab, if it is approved. If the principal pulls the trigger, do any of you have any surplus monitors that you were going to otherwise get rid of?  We would even…See More

Desktop Virtualization

Are any of the SEMTEC districts using desktop virtualization for their student technology labs?I have heard two recent pitches on using a desktop server or two to drive a whole computer lab with virtual desktops, at a significant cost savings over having 24 or 32 individual desktop systems in the student lab.Has anyone else looked into this? Thanks.See More

Obsolete Hard Drive Disposal with Secure Data Destruction

How does everyone else dispose of their obsolete Hard Drives?  We have accumulated quite a number of old hard drives, all less that 20 GB, that may have various pieces of sensitive student information scattered on them and we need to dispose of them in a secure manner. We received a bid from a local company that will grind them and recycle the metal, and is giving us a discounted price of $5 per drive (they say they charge businesses $10 per drive). Is that a good price?  Or are there better and…See More
