SEMTEC The SE MN preK-12 Technology Coordinators

Welcome to SEMTEC! Home of SE MN Educational Technology Leaders!

Just a heads-up for those of you that have not heard yet -

Facebook just rolled out the ability to continually browse their site using HTTPS.  All someone needs to do is set this to HTTPS at home, key in the https address on campus, and they can likely bypass your regular facebook filter.

You can find the setting for this under Account Security.  This would be a good time to look at your firewall policies, and see if you need to adjust them to keep people off this site.

You can always add an extra layer of filtering with OpenDNS, it cost nothing, CIPA compliant and works great. Plus blocks via dns so http or https makes no difference.

Good point.  Unfortunately, we have a few individuals that need access to this site, as well as a few others that are normally blocked.  We'd need to purchase OpenDNS's services to allow for this type of passthrough.  This could be a great option for others that don't have this need.
